Andiron Steak and Sea

As downtown Summerlin area continues to expand they boast more and more dining options.  Andiron Steak and Sea is a high end steak house that also serves a Wagyu burger.  Should you give it a try?  Let me tell you what I think.

Andiron (1)Andiron Steak and Sea is a formal dining destination. The dining room is gorgeous and the staff is eager and attentive. In a place like this I have had the wait staff give me a strange look for ordering the hamburger, but that was not the case here. I appreciated that touch of professionalism. I ordered the Wagyu Burger (Wagyu beef, aged English cheddar, heirloom tomatoes) and was able to enjoy a pleasant conversation with my dining companion and enjoy the ambiance. I really cannot overstate just how nice the dining room is.

When the burger arrived it was simply beautiful. The flavor was full with a great hint of smoke. It arrived as it was ordered, medium (and I should note that on placing the order the server took care to make sure I was going to receive what I wanted, noting that the center would be pink). The consistency of this burger bears noting as well. It had the mouth feel of a home-made burger that has not been over worked. On top of all the other sensations with this burger, you also need to imagine how juicy it was.  This was easily one of the juiciest burgers I have ever eaten.

Andiron (2)Apart from the burger, the aged cheddar and heirloom tomato did a perfect job of playing a support role. They did not take away from the burger but were a perfect accompaniment. I wish I could say the same about the bun. The bun had 2 things going against it. First it was too big. Second it was too dry.  And if it is dry it should absorb the juice of the burger well, but sadly it failed in this role as well. It was really too bad that they could have not made a fresher and more appropriate choice for the bun. It really hurt what could have been an amazing hamburger.

We have to spend a minute on the fries. In writing this review I am only considering the food itself, not the price of the food. But you should know that though I did not ding them for it, they charge 8 dollars for an order of fries. They were good, but at the end of the day they were just rustic fries. Adding fancy adjectives to them does not increase their flavor. They ended up tasting much like Five Guys fries only less greasy. They really were good but nothing amazing.

Aside from the poor bun choice, the other low point of the meal was the lemonade. Somehow, with a full bar here I anticipated that they would be able to make me an amazing glass of lemonade. That was not to be. It was not particularly tart or sweet. In fact it was not particularly anything but cold. It seemed watered down and I really regretted my choice.

All in all it was a good meal, but it is hard for me to think I will be back for a burger here. The bun was just too much of a disappointment. That said, I can easily imagine coming back for a special occasion and ordering something else. The wait staff was amazing. We sampled many things that are outside the scope of this review and there is much to recommend here, but unless they can change the bun I cannot imagine coming here for another burger.
