Lola’s

February 28th, 2013 by Erik Chudy

wimpy!Every now and then I come across a specialty restaurant known for some amazing ethnic food or just something completely odd that also happens to serve the perfect burger. I’m not here to present one today, as Lola’s didn’t provide me anything worthy. I’ve really enjoyed all of the dishes I have tried over the past couple years, but never even considered getting a burger there until someone suggested it months ago. And as the rule typically goes for me, if only one person in this city has suggested the burger there, it’s probably for a reason. continue reading »

Positivity Rules Here

February 25th, 2013 by Erik Chudy

There is a disturbing trend occurring in the Las Vegas writing world right now, a plague of positivity and ass kissing that I’m afraid is turning our restaurant owners, chefs and consumers into overly sensitive wimps. While I’m personally friends with some of these folks and hate to call them out, take a look at ANY food review in the Seven, Las Vegas Weekly, Review Journal or post from one of our local ‘celebrities’ and you will see nothing but positivity, brown nosing and praise. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an article suggesting a chef could have done better, that maybe they caught the restaurant on an off night, or that the service was bad. I assume this is usually a case of the restaurant knowing the reviewer is sitting there, so they’ve taken extra care to make sure the meal, service and experience are as perfect as possible preventing a risk for complaints. I also respect the fact that with very limited word counts, magazines like the Weekly want to use their valuable real estate to tell us about something good out there, but I feel like we’re being coddled a bit. Meanwhile the average person is continually getting sub-par service, overpriced lazy food from a majority of the Strip restaurants, and inconsistency across the board. continue reading »

Fat Choy

February 18th, 2013 by Erik Chudy

big eggThere seems to be a trend in Vegas where a slightly unique restaurant opens in town and everyone goes nuts over it for months on end. Case in point: Honey Salt, Eat, Poppy Den, any Gordon Ramsay restaurant, and pretty much half the places on the Strip. And from my experience so far at some of these places, they’re all overrated and honestly nothing out of this world. If you were worried that there weren’t any new ones, along comes Fat Choy to kill your worries. On top of their ‘famous’ bao buns they’re now offering a trendy burger to please the masses, so I headed over to see what all the hype was about. continue reading »

Bar + Bistro

February 11th, 2013 by Erik Chudy

colorfulNow that my office is near the downtown area I have a whole new set of restaurants at my disposal. Starting with the closest in my vicinity I first headed over to Bar + Bistro. I’ve had ok meals here in the past, although I’ve found the service iffy and prices a bit high, but when I was contacted by Chef Beni Velasquez to come try their burger I was intrigued because I hadn’t yet noticed it on their menu. He promised me a great burger with three different meats, so that couldn’t be bad right? continue reading »

Hi Scores Bar-Arcade

February 5th, 2013 by Erik Chudy

crazy displayTrying to take care of a few final Henderson restaurant reviews before I moved my office completely away from the area, I recently headed over to the Hi Scores Bar-Arcade to grab a burger and check out the scene. I have a friend that is a regular there, and speaks very highly of the staff, the space and their food so I figured it would be good lunch. Can going to a video game-based bar for lunch be a good idea? continue reading »
