KGB (Kerry’s Gourmet Burgers)

July 11th, 2011 by Erik Chudy

This is another puzzling burger for me. In general I feel that a majority of the restaurants on the strip are dialing it in; no matter how little they try and how much they charge, the property knows that if you’re staying in their building you’re going to eat there. They’re also banking on the fact that the typical tourist that eats in Vegas has zero taste and doesn’t know what good food is. I’m no tourist, and I’m very picky, so watch out. continue reading »

BLT Burger

July 3rd, 2011 by Erik Chudy

This meal was so bad I was actually angry during it, and it makes me even madder that I have to give it a proper review and waste space on my website. I didn’t get a decent picture of the burger, but it doesn’t matter. The feature burger restaurant for the MGM Mirage has only a couple pre-designed burgers on their menu, otherwise they leave it to the diner to create their own, which is a bit uninspired. This is a gripe you will start seeing more and more from me. If you are some famous chef and you’re tying your name to the feature burger joint of the ‘INSERT CASINO NAME’ you should take the time to design a few creative burgers. This is what you do.

The meat was completely lacking flavor, not cooked to order, and just not what it should be.  The first thing that pisses me off about a burger is if you can’t serve it medium-rare when I order it that way. You’re a burger joint, if you can’t handle that then you might as well give up now. The bun wasn’t great, very dry and typical. The toppings weren’t good either, 3 for 3 so far! The fries had a foul taste to them, like the oil they were cooked in was a few days too old. $50 for two people at this low of a quality led this to be one of the worst I’ve had yet.

Overall score: 68

Holstein's 'Gold Standard' burgerSo close but so far is all I can say of this new restaurant.  I went with a friend on opening night and everything was perfect; the meat was cooked to order, the toppings were flavorful and well proportioned, the bun was great, and I walked out of there claiming that it might have unseated Burger Bar as one of my favorites (More on Burger Bar in a future article).  The bacon, cheese, and garlic aioli all had great flavor, and didn’t compete with each other.  I went back a second time a week later with the always negative writer of our sister site, the Boston Burger Blog, and the meat was very overcooked.  Again the toppings and bun were excellent, but the overcooked meat greatly took away from our experience and flavor.  We both agreed that if the meat was cooked medium-rare as ordered, it would have earned several more points.  Being a restaurant that has a burger and shake theme, this is something that really should be right every time.

Greetings, hungry reader

Welcome to the Vegas Burger Blog.  I am your host Erik Chudy, and I’m here to nitpick and complain about every burger in the Las Vegas area.  Some of you might be thinking, “you seem like a jerk, you’re already admitting to complaining about a burger you haven’t even tried yet” and you’d be right.  But I have good reason.  See, most burger places regularly serve sub-par burgers, and I think a majority of you are easily impressed.  It’s my job to go around town, try all these burgers, and provide an honest opinion so that the public is properly informed.  It’s probably not going to help me lose any weight, but this is how I sacrifice myself for the common good.  Yea, I’m nice like that. continue reading »
